Upcoming: 2011 Cape Kiwanda Longboard Classic

The Cape Kiwanda Longboard Classic is always a good time and this year it will be even better.

That's because all the proceeds are going to help pay for the formation of the Nestucca Valley High School Surf Team. Moment Surf Company is organizing the contest and owner Jeff Mollencop told me they already have four groms they've been sponsoring who will form the core of the team. Moment's been providing the surfers with equipment from rental stock, but the money brought in from the contest will help pay for new gear and travel costs.

For $40 you'll get entry into the September 24 and 25 contest, a T-shirt and the good feeling from backing some young, local surfers. In addition to the surfing, the aprés surf scene will be in full swing. Friday night (Sept. 23) there will be a pig roast and bonfire on the beach from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., during which walk-up registration will be open. (You can also register online.)  Saturday from 5 p.m. till 10 p.m. there will be a beer garden and dinner on the beach serenaded by live music from Trio. Sunday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. the awards ceremony will go down followed by a beach cleanup.

The contest is open to boards 9' and longer and competitors will be judged on "size and quality of wave selection, length of ride and, most importantly, maneuvers rider completes on the critical sections of the wave," according to the contest website. Get signed up. There's room for 120 surfers.

 See you there.
